Preserving and Sharing the Stories of South Australia
iscover South Australia’s History is a growing digital archive created by the Professional Historians Association (SA) to preserve, celebrate, and share the rich history of South Australia. Through original research, rare historical works, photographs, essays, and archival contributions from PHA (SA) members, the platform provides public access to stories and materials that might otherwise remain unseen or inaccessible.
From short historical insights to in-depth reports and essays, the collection reflects the diversity of South Australia’s people, places, events, and heritage. The site continues to expand with new contributions, helping connect communities, researchers, educators, and future generations with the State’s historical legacy.
Discover South Australia's History
Discover South Australia’s History was created by the Professional Historians Association (SA) to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the establishment of South Australia in 2011. Officially launched in March 2011 during the 30th anniversary of PHA (SA), the platform serves as an evolving digital archive dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the State.
The site features contributions written by members of PHA (SA), including original research, essays, historical reports, photographs, chapters, and archival material focused entirely on South Australian history. Many of these works have never previously been made publicly available, while others have been reproduced because the original publications are now out of print or unavailable in digital form.
Content ranges from concise historical entries to substantial essays and detailed research reports, offering visitors a diverse and continually growing collection of historical resources. New articles, stories, and images continue to be added as ongoing contributions are prepared.
Visitors can explore the archive through keyword searches, title listings, author indexes, or special collections such as “On This Day” and “State Treasures,” which highlight important events, objects, and moments connected to South Australia’s heritage.
